At GCC, your education focuses on a strong liberal arts background similar to the first two years of many Criminal Justice programs offered by four-year colleges and universities.  In addition to the general education requirements, you will also pursue a core curriculum of Criminal Justice courses.

Degree Types

Associate In Science (AS)

AS Program Learning Outcomes (PLO)

Upon completion of the Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree in Criminal Justice, the student will demonstrate the following through identified student learning outcomes in courses:

  1. Differentiate among the criminological theories of why people commit crime.
  2. Assess the roles of the three main components of the criminal justice system (police, courts and corrections).
  3. Apply an ethical analysis to problems concerning the criminal justice system.
  4. Explain the international dimensions of criminal justice related issues.
  5. Apply administrative principles to criminal justice issues within the three main components of the criminal justice system.
  6. Analyze critically scholarly research on contemporary criminal justice issues.
  7. Prepare academically supported written communications on contemporary criminal justice issues.
  8. Utilize criminal justice related technology in support of an inquiry or investigation.
  9. Communicate effectively within a criminal justice setting.

Associate In Applied Science (AAS)

AAS Program Learning Outcomes (PLO)

Upon completion of the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Criminal Justice, the student will demonstrate the following through identified student learning outcomes in courses:

  1. Evaluate how the two analytical approaches (Due Process Model and Crime Control Model) are utilized within the criminal justice system.
  2. Assess the roles of the three main components of the criminal justice system (police, courts and corrections).
  3. Apply an ethical analysis to problems concerning the criminal justice system.
  4. Explain the international dimensions of criminal justice related issues.
  5. Apply administrative principles to criminal justice issues within the three main components of the criminal justice system.
  6. Utilize criminal justice related technology in support of an inquiry or investigation.
  7. Communicate effectively within a criminal justice setting

CORRECTIONS COUNSELING CONCENTRATION

  1. Describe how the correctional system fits into the overall criminal justice system.
  2. Explain the purposes of corrections.
  3. Describe the organizational structure of the correctional system (federal and state).

FORENSICS CONCENTRATION

  1. Demonstrate proper investigative techniques utilized in forensics.
  2. Utilize the scientific method to explore the branches of forensics.

HOMELAND SECURITY/EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATION

  1. Explain the different man-made and natural risks that face the United States.
  2. Evaluate critical information from an emergency situation in development of an appropriate emergency response.

POLICING CONCENTRATION

  1. Describe the basic structural organizations of police departments.
  2. Demonstrate proper investigative techniques utilized in a crime scene.
  3. Explain the basic concepts of how departments police communities.

Certificate (CERT)

CERT Program Learning Outcomes (PLO)

Upon completion of the Certificate in Criminal Justice, the student will demonstrate the following through identified student learning outcomes in courses:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the criminal justice system and its components.
  2. Identify the criminological theories and their application to contemporary public policy.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to integrate and apply analytical skills and substantive knowledge to specific criminal justice issues.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in criminal justice.
  5. Display the ability to identify, locate, manage and use legal, technological and other professional resource materials in the criminal justice field.
  6. Exhibit the knowledge and skill required to be an informed citizen in the global community.
  7. Demonstrate adequate preparation for career development or baccalaureate degree program success through the acquisition of a solid foundation in the criminal justice field

Transfer Opportunities

Starting at GCC saves many students and their families thousands of dollars in tuition. With an A.S. or A.A. degree you will be able to seamlessly transfer within the SUNY network of 64 college and universities as well as to many 4-year private institutions. GCC’s A.S. and A.A. programs were developed as part of the SUNY seamless transfer initiative allowing students to complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree as a freshman and a sophomore at a community college, then seamlessly transfer to a SUNY four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. Please reference the SUNY Transfer Pathways for degree programs to learn about any campus specific requirements. Visit the SUNY Core Course Finder to plan out the courses you should complete to transfer to a 4-year SUNY School.

If you are planning to transfer to a 4-year private institution you should work with our Transfer Services office to learn about possible articulation agreements and pathways that exist for many or our degree programs. Some GCC A.A.S. programs also have transfer opportunities.
